project overview
Medportal is the online portal for McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. It offers a central location for class resources, tutorial case studies, administration communication, student planning and school policy. Medportal encompasses standard web pages, forum / blog communities, online course hosting and custom elearning modules.
Medportal is an initiative undertaken by the Division of eLearning Innovation (Deli) at McMaster University.
responsibilities
Within Medportal I have taken on many roles. Mostly they revolve around web development. I was responsible for the creation and maintenance of Medportal sites as well as assisting with the implementation of the initial website design. I was also responsible for the design and implementation of the Medportal forums and blog communities. This was done in the community server infrastructure.
Hand in hand with the management of the Medportal design, I helped develop Medportal icons and small character illustrations. These ranged from tool icons to holiday related welcome messages. The small characters were always a hit with students who appreciated the small touches to making the online system more welcoming.
In addition to maintaining the site, I often worked as support to the medical school’s administrative staff and students when dealing with more technical requests.
debrief
Medportal was an extremely enriching project to work on. Through it, I learned new and improved upon web development skills, illustration techniques and design approaches.
