Heart Break is a 4 player 2v2 fighting game developed for the 2013 Global Game Jam. During gameplay, two players control the fighters themselves while their partners manage the balance of blood to the other parts of the body. Placing more blood in the arms increases punching and blocking power; more blood in the torso increases heartiness and dmg resistance and emphasis on the feet increases movement speed and kick power.
Each ability carries with it it's own characteristics. Punching is powerful but has a short range and can be blocked; defence decreases damage taken but sacrifices attack and kicking has medium damage but long range and can break through a block.
The game is best played with 2 keyboards (with each team playing on a single keyboard) or with just 1 if players don't mind crowding together.
For this project I was mainly responsible for working on the graphical style of the game alongside Nikki Martin. In addition to general graphic creation, I was responsible specifically for the character design and animation (animated with Flash CS5).
Design was generally shared amongst all group members while spearheaded by Deshin Finlay and Michael D'Andrea (our gameplay/backend programmers)
The overal creation of the game was well organized. Our team had a clear vision of the game we wanted and were able to execute on that vision. For myself, I greatly enjoyed the graphical and animation aspects of the projects.
I did, however, struggle when it came to the music of the game. I had never before used Garage Band and was not particularly impressed by my final composition that the game was delivered with. With limited time and resources in such a jam, it is not always possible to have musical talent and I believe our team did a good job of working with the talent we had (additional sound effects were created by Jason Bolanos - on of our programmers).
